7th grade Homework 5/6- 5/10


This week while students are researching and beginning to plan their ELO 8 career essay, they will be reading our class novel The Giver by Lois Lowry. This science fiction novel is about a boy who is given a career position in his community that drastically changes his life. As students research their own potential career it is important to consider Jonas' own struggles and achievements: how has his career shaped who he is? How will your own potential career shape who you are too?

** Independent Reading Project due date has been moved to next week so we can finish The Giver. If you finished early you may want to start your book review, and choose and book project to complete. Book Review due May 16th and Book Project due the week after to be announced)

Monday 5/6 (The importance of memories)

Read Chapter 16. Answer questions in 2-3 complete sentences.

1. What is The Giver's favorite memory that he gives to Jonas? Why is it his favorite? How do you know?

2. How does Jonas' father and mother respond when he asks them "Do you love me?" Do they answer him or not?

3. What has Jonas' been giving Gabe? What inference can you make about Gabe?

Tuesday 5/7 (Feelings)

Read Chapter 17. Answer questions in 2-3 complete sentences.

1. At the beginning of the chapter how does he compare his own feeling (such as The Stirrings) to his sister's anger? How does he "feel" now?

2. How does Jonas feel when he sees his friends playing the game of war? What memories does this game evoke for Jonas?

Wednesday 5/8 (Rosemary)

Read Chapter 18. Answer questions in 2-3 complete sentences.

1. Who is Rosemary?

2. Why can Jonas never apply to be released? What would happen? 

Thursday 5/9 (What it means to be released)

Read Chapter 19. Answer questions in 2-3 complete sentences.

1. Summarize what happens when Jonas' father releases the twin.

2. What does it mean to be "released" from the community?

Friday 5/10

Read Chapter 20-21. Answer questions in 2-3 complete sentences.

1. How does Jonas respond to seeing his father release the twin? What does The Giver suggest they do?

2. What else do we learn about the Giver and Rosemary?

3. In chapter 21, what has the community decided about Gabe?

4. How does Jonas' plans change?
